Between November 25th and December 10th, 2001,
individuals and member organizations of the National
Network to End the War Against Iraq will begin a "fall
fast and prayer" action. People of conscience of all
faiths will be encouraged to join the action by engaging
in fasting, prayer, resting, candlelight vigils and
other actions to call for peace. During this
period, many faiths observe important holidays,
including Advent (Christian), Ramadan (Muslim) and
Hanukkah (Jewish). This action was part of the
plan set out by members of NNEWAI at the founding
conference in February 2001. The original purpose
was to show solidarity with and raise awareness of the
suffering of the Iraqi people, living under sanctions.
However, since the attacks on New York City and
Washington on September 11th, and the onset of war in
Afghanistan, the scope of the event has been expanded to
include reflecting upon the suffering of innocent
victims in the United States, Afghanistan as well as
Iraq. For details
