Iraqi
orchestra soldiers on Playing on despite sanctions & shortages
Caroline Hawley, BBC, 4 November, 2002
They
play from photocopied music sheet, they have lost many of their players,
but members of the Iraqi National Symphony Orchestra say that, even with
the threat of renewed conflict, the show must go on.
"Sanctions have affected us all in many ways," says 39-year-old cellist,
Omar al-Sheikh, who works as an engineer by day.
"There are problems with the availability of instruments and of spare
parts. One of my strings broke and I couldn't find a replacement."
But the conductor, Abdel Razzak Al-Azzawi, makes light of these "minor"
inconveniences, insisting that "life has to continue."

350,000 March against the War in London
Commondreams.org

The voice
of middle-class England was how Debbie Mainwaring described
herself yesterday as she stood amid the clamor of one of the
biggest anti-war demonstrations ever, and it was clear that
she was not alone. The sheer numbers who turned out to express
vociferous opposition to military
action in Iraq – between 150,000 and 350,000 on
the central London march – meant there was no way they could
be dismissed as "the usual suspects" of the hard left.
